4 Ways I Advocate For Women Empowerment In Singapore

Women have been facing unequal treatment from society for numerous centuries now. According to a 2019 study published in the Cambridge University Press, gender inequalities were already present about 8000 years ago when civilisations began building agricultural settlements. Thousands of years since their existence, the public still treats the female gender unevenly—but things are now changing thanks to women empowerment efforts in Singapore and other parts of the globe.

What Is Women Empowerment, And Is It Important?

According to the World Vision, women empowerment aims to uplift the female gender’s self-esteem, ability to make choices for themselves, and freedom to shape a world that values everyone equally without judgement or prejudice. It is a movement that has been around since the 19th century when people began questioning why society treats genders differently. They started examining and breaking the notion that the male is the superior gender due to its forceful ways.

Without women empowerment, we would continue to live in a world where the female gender would have limited rights. Women like me would never get the chance to study, vote, work, or have a say in how we want to live. Additionally, women empowerment enables people to access essential aids such as healthcare assistance and student care services that have always been available to men.

How I Advocate For Women Empowerment In Singapore

Since I was a young teenager, I was always fond of learning about history—which was how I discovered the inequalities women had to endure to live. After learning about the injustices the female gender experiences, I knew I wanted a change in this society. Fortunately, numerous people thought the same, which led to the birth of every women association in Singapore.

Due to my desire to change how society views females like me, I began advocating for women empowerment in Singapore—and here is how I slowly aim to change the course for us:

1. Educating Myself And Others About Issues And Causes

I could never support women empowerment without understanding it—so I did my best to research as much information as possible about it. After studying the movement with the help of resources from a women-led association called PPIS, I decided to spread my learning to encourage others to support a similar cause.

2. Supporting Women-Led Brands

More often than not, women-owned businesses receive less recognition and revenue than their male counterparts. Instead of shopping from their competitors, I support them—especially if they dedicate a portion of their profits to advocating for a women led association.

3. Participating In Events Focusing On Women Empowerment

Whenever I have free time, I attend forums or symposiums about women empowerment in Singapore. Doing so allows me to gain more knowledge about the movement, which I can use to educate others and figure out other ways to show support to women.

4. Joining Volunteer Groups For Women Empowerment

I drop by the PPIS office to join their volunteering opportunities in Singapore as often as possible. This simple gesture helps the organisation make its women empowerment programmes possible.

Frankly, I would not be able to do anything about gender inequality without PPIS or the Singapore Muslim Women’s Association. Thanks to their efforts to raise awareness about the issues affecting the female gender, I would have never become a dedicated advocate of women empowerment.

If you plan on supporting women empowerment in Singapore, I strongly encourage you to join me and PPIS in making the world a better place for women. Check out its website to learn how to help its association and programmes.
