Miessence Organic Skin Care
Why does organic skin care even matter?
Certified Organic skincare is very, very different to a skin care product simply labeled 'organic' or 'natural'. It seems that there are many of 'organic' skin care products out there but one has to be careful as all is not as it seems!
Genuinely certified organic skin care is made from certified organic ingredients, which are organically grown, with different regulations to conventional farming.
The cosmetic industry's definition of organic
is significantly less rigorous than that of a certified organically
grown ingredient. In order to achieve the organic standard,
products are grown in an environment where rigorous testing, on the
standards of the certified organic ingredients, occurs as well as
undergoing audits, traceability logs and site inspections.
The cosmetics industry is a billion dollar industry, there is, sadly, somewhat of an incentive to keep standards as unregulated as they are. According to Stacey Malkan, of Safe Cosmetics, a typical highstreet lipstick that costs $24.99 actually only costs 15 cents to produce. There is little forward thinking in regulation which relis on the premise of 'prove it is not dangerous' versus 'prove it is safe'. This does not protect us as consumers.
"Consumers believe that 'if it's on the market, it can't hurt me.' And this belief is sometimes wrong." - Director of FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors (FDA 1998).
This statement, made over twenty years ago, shows that we must become informed consumers, as in twenty years remarkably little has been done to protect consumers. In fact according to the movie "Food Inc." the FDA conducts less safety tests now than it did in 1976!
Know what you are buying as each dollar we spend is a vote, either for sustainabilty and beneficial products or waste and polluting products.
Careful! "Natural" can to have two definitions
'Truly' natural is a nut, fruit, vegetable, seed or oil that is safe, edible and food grade - good enough to eat, basically.
Cometics companies define natural as "naturally derived/synthesised" so the ingredient on a label could have started out as a coconut but have been through synthetic processes to make it the ingredient on the label saying "derived from" on your moisturizer!
The problem with "naturally derived" or "synthesized" is the process that the natural ingredient goes through. In these processes, such as ethoxylation, for example, synthetic chemicals are formed that are by-products, these are often the products, that concern us.
Ethoxylation forms 1,4-dioxane which is a known human carcinogen. You can become an ingredient detective though and learn what ingredients on the label are an indicator that there might be a carcinogenic ingredient in your shampoo.
The nitrosamine forming agent ingredients are: Any ingredient with ETH in the word. Laureth, meth, phenoxyethanol, to name a few. You will not find 1,4-dioxane listed on ingredients as it is only a by-product of a process.
What is the answer?
Become an ingredient detective, look at what ingredients to avoid and then scrutinise carefully when shopping. Anyone can make label claims, like "fresh", "natural", "organic ingredients", "botanically created" and it is only on closer inspection that the real truth is revealed in the ingredients list.
If you choose to opt for
genuinely (Third party certified) organic ingredients, there are
great companies out there, and it can seem expensive but in
compared to what? A heavily marketed synthetic and
potentially harmful product that has low cost and quality
ingredients, versus a genuine product with high quality
ingredients. I found it was more about my perception than
price when I first started scrutinising labels.
I rep for Miessence and feel confident offering and advising on their products. Be sure what you are buying and the best way to be sure is to learn and read ingredients lists.
What do Miessence use as a preservative if they don't use toxic, synthetic chemicals?
Miessence products are preserved using a genuinely natural and organic preservative system, which includes our proprietary blend of steam-distilled aromatic derivatives of natural herbs, leaves and twigs.
The stability of our unique products is supported by long term, real-time stability testing, microbiological challenge testing, analysis of types of packaging in use, assessment of the potential for microbial contamination, reviewing analytical data from suppliers, quality control testing of raw materials and finished products, ensuring our manufacturing facilities minimise exposure to contaminants, understanding consumer habits and practices, and, importantly, our R&D director's extensive experience with her home-grown, unique formulations.
Miessence products do what they say on the bottle, they work! They nourish the skin and are made from organically farmed ingredients and most products are certified organic by the ACO (Australian Certified Organic) or USDA.
Miessence recommends that you use the products up within six months of opening to ensure you get the benefit of the cold-formulation and freshly extracted herbal, floral and fruit extracts.
