DIY beauty recipes that work
I never thought I’d be making my own skin care, yet now, after the odd hiccup, I successfully make products in minutes.
I make my own cleanser, hand and nail balm, facial oil and all purpose household cleaner. I have been doing this for a few years now and it is fun. It started with a nail balm, then face mask and it gathered steam into all sorts of home-made goodies.
DIY ORGANIC Beauty Recipes: E-Book
There is a new e-book called DIY ORGANIC beauty recipes that shares ways to do just that, make superb home-made goodies.
It is so easy to make your own products and assuming you do not add water then there is little need for a preservative as you will, like me, make small batches and use them in a month. Won’t you?!
I make a cleanser each month and add in different essential oils depending on how my skin feels.
My decisions of what essential oils to choose has to do with what the weather is like outside. Using the same products week in week out is rather boring in comparison to home-made, cosmetic, culinary fun!
The beginners and experts guide
For those wanting a definitive guide to making your own skin care and beauty recipes but are unsure where to start then this is something to consider. I am happy to recommend it (and use my affiliate link) as Heather has done a good job researching, explaining and sharing ways to make your own skin care.
Heather’s DIY Organic Beauty Book is a welcome addition to the natural beauty world. I am so keen that we stop using oodles of synthetic chemicals and that is why I am happy to be an affiliate for Heather’s DIY Beauty Organic Beauty Recipe book.
Heather has created this e-book which is packed full of recipes for making your own non-toxic beauty recipes. Have you wondered how to make soap, eye make up remover and lip balm? Wonder no more – recipes are in the book!
Mommypotamus pretty much covered every DIY beauty eventuality in her book. I can tell it took a lot of hours creating the content, proof reading and some great photographs. The pictures alone are a reason to buy the book!
Beauty recipes include:
- Soaps- both hard soap and body wash
- Shampoos- two different types depending on your hair condition.
- Honey Conditioner, which Heather writes “Raw honey does an amazing job of sealing the hair cuticle, locking in moisture, and imparting a deep, glossy shine” ooh sounds lovely
- Toothpaste, tooth soap and tooth powder – so depending on what you enjoy keeping your pearly whites white you can make it at home.
Caring for your teeth need not be with toxic ingredients like triclosan!
The DIY Organic Beauty book has cleanser recipes too, based on using the increasingly popular oil cleansing method- which I use and LOVE. I use a slightly different recipe but find that using oil on the skin is a smart woman’s choice.
Oil has a natural affinity with our skin and it is far nicer than using harsh surfactants (like sodium lauryl sulphate) that can strip the skin.
Is natural always safe?
No; let me just add this caveat that just because something is classified as ‘natural’ doesn’t mean it is automatically safe. Lead is natural, so is deadly nightshade but they are known to be harmful.
That is precisely why I like Heather’s book so much, she has taken the time to do her research, back it up with references and not use dubious ingredients like grapefruit seed extract which I would not use on my skin, yet are commonly found in ‘natural’ skin care products.
Oil and no water
Heather makes a valid point (one that Helena Lane also says often) which is that by making the recipes oil and butter based it negates the use of a preservative.
Other recipes include a delicious sounding Body Butter, which seeing as the ingredients are coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax with vitamin E – it is edible.
Now that’s my kind of skin care as I am a fan of edible ingredients -as you probably you know!
If you want to learn a few great recipes, no one is suggesting you have to make them all, to start to wean yourself off synthetic chemical skin care then this buying the DIY Organic Beauty book is a good choice.
