What is so good about certified organic skin care

Our body absorbs a lot of what we use on it

Not only that many synthetic ingredients actually can irritate the skin and exacerbate psoriasis, eczema, acne and dermatitis.  I have clients who have had, seemingly permanent, distressing skin conditions which, when stopping using the synthetic ingredients from the products, the skin started to find balance.  It seems so simple really!

girlmakeupThe average North American teenager uses twenty products a day, exposing her to 230 synthetic chemicals each day, 365 days of the year! [1]  Now even smaller children are using nail polish, lip gloss and eye shadows, girls as young as three are reported to use nail polish on a regular basis!

The average woman uses nine products each day exposing her to 120 synthetic chemicals a day.  Of these chemicals there are more than likely to be known carcinogens, hormone disrupting chemicals, persistent bio-accumulative toxins and fragrance mixtures.[1]

What does all this mean for us?

shampooladySome chemicals that are in your daily skin care, or hair care routine, have questionable levels of safety.

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) state that individuals using a substance, which can be found in many everyday shampoos but also is used in industry, have to use gloves, respirator, goggles and full safety equipment and yet few of us do this when shampooing our hair on a daily basis!

It may sound unreal but sadly sodium lauryl sulphate, is one such ingredient.  The MSDA sheets for Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) state "Hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (sensitizer). Severe over-exposure can result in death."  I don't think that a toxic ingredient like that deserves to be in baby shampoo or my cleanser.

So what is so special about Certified Organic Skincare?

Organic skincare, such as Miessence, which is certified by a third party certification, in this case the Australian Certified Organic or USDA indicates that harmful synthetic chemicals are not allowed.  You can be assured that the products are certified organically grown plants, certified organic essential oils and with Miessence, certified organic aloe vera, which happens to be the main ingredient in most Miessence products.

Why use certified organic?

Skin EssentialsJust as many are keen to improve their health and wellness through wise food choices, it is a natural progression to look at what we use on our skin.

For example, in the shower we breathe in the air and smell of our shampoo, so it stands to reason that using a genuinely 100% beneficial shampoo is a good idea, free of synthetic chemical ingredients and fragrances, which are known, to industry, to be harmful to health.

Likewise using perfumes, which often are synthetic fragrances means that we are using petroleum based products.  So switching to using certified organic botanical perfumes ensures that we are using the highest, safest quality available in the world.  Thankfully there are now organic alternatives.

I have also noticed that by using organic skin care my skin has not only improved in tone but I have a glow which conventional skin care did not provide, it stands to reason as the body likes real food so why would my skin not like real food too?
